A quick fandom update!

It's been a while since I touched base here! I've actually been super-busy with fun fandom things, but haven't had the time to post about them. So, an update!
First and foremost...
1. LeeFest 2019 !!!
YES, I am going to see Lee again! IN TWO DAYS. This time in a play! And, as you can probably imagine, I'M A LITTLE BIT EXCITED.
Lee is appearing off-Broadway in the play "Long Lost," written by Pulitzer Prize-winning Donald Margulies. The play has been in previews for the last 3 weeks and had its official opening on Tuesday night. My husband and I are attending this Saturday's evening performance, alongside
tobyfan,
miltil, and
discreetmadchen, all of whom I met in 2017 at the PaleyFest Oz reunion. AND in a delightful coincidence,
suespur had already made plans to be in NYC this weekend, and she'll be there, too! WOOT! Michiganders represent! A long-time Oz fan named Jessica (she was at Godfather IV), who I've come to know through Twitter, will also be there.
The play sounds awesome, and Lee is basically the co-lead as a recovering-addict ex-con (sound familiar? LOL) who suddenly reappears and wreaks havoc in the life of his wealthy, successful younger brother (Angus?!). Here is a quick montage video of some highlights from the play put out by the theater company:
As awesome as the PaleyFest reunion was, I've always longed to Lee actually *perform* in person, and I can't believe it's going to happen. ZOMG
2. A New Fandom! Kind of!
In keeping with my tradition of discovering fandoms at least 5-10 years after everyone else...
At the end of April, along with half the world, I saw the movie Avengers: Endgame. Now, I've been a casual Marvel fan at best, seeing maybe half the movies in the universe (the other Avengers movies, and the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, and a few others here and there). And while I'd enjoyed the ones I'd watched very much, I was never really "into" the whole thing. And that changed when I saw Endgame. I was BLOWN AWAY and thought the whole movie was AMAZING and that it was the most PERFECT way to end the series, and I was like, WOW, I get it! I FINALLY GET IT. So, I went on this big marathon of watching every Marvel movie in sequence (the lone exception being the Incredible Hulk, because apparently that movie's pretty bad and has little tie-in with the rest of the universe and didn't even have Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk), and my excitement GREW, because I finally realized the extent of the intricacies of the plots and I was blown away by how they all came together, and OMG, now I love these movies so much! And then I went back and watched Endgame a second time, and I understood everything so much more, and now I have that FEELING you get when you love something so much you don't even know how to begin to celebrate it.
I thought I might want to write fic for it!
BUT I checked out AO3 to see what was going on there, and OMG, there is SO much stuff. And... I don't like a lot of it. There's a lot of people into things I'm totally not into, at least not in the way they are. Which is fine! Whatever floats your boat, and all that, but it's so overwhelming and it's been hard to find my niche.
Once again, as I discovered with Stranger Things, I'm not sure big fandoms are for me.
*runs back to Oz*
3. Writing :(
I want to do more writing, but I'm in a bit of a funk. There was a superpower prompt at
hardtime100 that I was so excited for, but I couldn't transfer the witty banter in my head to the screen. I want to settle down and get back to my neglected Big Oz Fic, but other shiny objects keep distracting me (like the trailer for the new Spiderman movie where he deals with the fallout from Endgame OMG Tom Holland is awesome). I do have this Holly Beecher ficlet that I started way back last Halloween that I'm poking at again. I think I like it, even if there's not much to it. Sometimes I need to remind myself that short stories are OK too. Maybe that will get me going again.
Anyway, that's about it! Hopefully, I'll have something about meeting Lee to post later (maybe not 6,000 words like last time, but *something* anyway :D)!

Date: 2019-06-06 06:57 pm (UTC)2. I've several of the movies but not endgame yet. Good stuff.
3. I get that. Lost my Oz muse back in about '04 and he never came back.

Date: 2019-06-06 07:29 pm (UTC)Oh I get that about big fandoms. I've tried since 2013 or so to find decent Avengers fic..and I just..mostly can't. If you wrote some there would at least be some.
I would love to read the Holly fic so i hope you finish it.
Do you have any Avengers things you ship?

Date: 2019-06-20 04:13 pm (UTC)No, I don't, and I think that's part of my problem. I love almost all the characters, and I love how they all interact with each other, but I'm not interested in shipping any of them romantically. I just want gen fic where there's lots of snarky, funny banter while they save the universe, maybe with a little hurt/comfort thrown in there. And maybe there is some of that out there, but the fandom is just so big, it's hard to track it down, even with AO3's extensive tagging system.
Like you said, maybe I'll just have to write it myself! Heh.

The play looks great. Tell us how it was and how cute Lee was :)

Date: 2019-06-10 10:24 pm (UTC)I foresee Oz always being my fandom. So many possibilities. I haven’t really written for any other fandoms. I mean, unless you count Oz/SVU crossovers. I lump that in with my Oz stuff.
OMG! I’m so bummed I missed you all Saturday! Of all the weekends to have a craft show. I can’t wait for write-up. I love hearing LEEFEST adventures! Details! I need details! I’m a Lee- play virgin too! (Excited for Daddy Lee to pop that cherry!!! 😈😳😳😳😳😳🥰) Oh lord, I did just say that. How was it seeing him act LIVE for the first time?!?! Will your write-up include pictures??? lol I’ll just have to wait an see!😁

Date: 2019-06-21 03:18 pm (UTC)I have been there for Marvel all along the way, saw all of them in the cinema (except Dr Strange, cos I'm so totally over BC) and got more and more excited as they travelled towards Endgame which absolutely blew me away. I cannot get over how much they tied together and how many stories they packed in and what a worthy ending it was.
To my surprise, Cap was my favourite. I didn't know the character, wasn't interested in a rah-rah America character, but was totally delighted in his first movie. And I've loved Phil Coulson since he was in The West Wing (I swear it's the same character).
But to my great disappointment, there was very little fic pairing them, and very little of that was good. Though intriguingly, there's quite a bit of very good fic pairing each of them with Hawkeye. (It's funny how certain pairings just happen to get quality writers, even if there isn't much in the canon.)
I'm afraid I can't give much direction for genfic. Genfic is rarely my thing.

Date: 2019-06-23 04:17 pm (UTC)A couple of days before I saw Endgame, I just happened to catch the first Captain America movie on TV, and I loved it. And of course, I'm so glad I saw it beforehand, because that ending scene in Endgame with him dancing with Agent Carter wouldn't have had the impact otherwise. That's really what sent me on my mission to do the complete watch--I wondered what else there was in the movie that I might not have picked up on. (Not to mention some really the basic stuff. I remember when Robert Redford showed up, and I was like, "waaaaiiit a minute, who's he? Is he supposed to be a good guy or bad?")
To my own surprise, my favorite character is ... Thor. I think it's partly because I always have the feeling that Chris Hemsworth is playing the role with a wink-and-a-nudge, and that appeals to me. (Also, he's hot. LOL) And then that's what made Thor's breakdown in Endgame, when he's suffering from PTSD, so moving and powerful. It was a genius way to flesh out the character, and I thought Hemsworth played it perfectly. I love that they had him taking off with Quill at the end. That's a pairing that I might get behind.

Date: 2019-06-26 03:36 pm (UTC)Robert Downey Jnr has the incredible charisma that makes me guiltily like his character even as I rant about what a terrible person he is. Cumberbatch may be a great Sherlock, but he doesn't have that.
I went back and watched most of the way through after seeing Endgame, and was delighted by how many little details and one-liners I'd forgotten about had been reflected in Endgame.
No surprise in loving Thaw. He's awesome. Hemsworth is fabulous. Ragnarok was one of the best movies of the whole franchise. I really don't know what it is that doesn't have me interested in Thor fic. Maybe because I find it hard to imagine how he'd be anything but a perfect lover, and I'd rather read/write the fucked up ones.

YES. I am a total sucker for a good redemption arc, and that's why I loved the end of Endgame, as sad as it was. I've seen a lot of Tony Stark fans upset about what happened, but him sacrificing himself for The Good of the World was the perfect ending for the character, and it also showed how good an actor RDJ can be. God, I even loved Gwyneth Paltrow in that scene!
