Summary: Beecher comes back to Oz a changed man.
Notes: Set during Season 666. Written for the 2023 Spook Me Multi-Fandom Halloween Ficathon. Cross-posted to AO3 and Livejournal. The artwork prompts sent to me are included at the end. This story was also inspired in part by the following piece of fanart I created several years ago:

I wrote not one, not two, but THREE stories for the Spook Me fest this year! I don't think I've written anything since last year's Oz Magi, so this was quite the accomplishment. Two of them are for fandoms I've never written in before, so... braving new territory here! I'll be making each fic a separate post, because my OCD tells me to. Heh.

First up... Oz, which is also the story I'm the most pleased with.

Happy Halloween, my friends!

Title: Burying Secrets
Main Characters/Pairings: Tobias Beecher/Chris Keller
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 1,671
Creature Prompt: Skeleton
Summary: Chris tries to bury a secret, when past secrets come to bury him.
Notes: Written for the 2021 Spook Me Mult-Fandom Halloween Ficathon. Cross-posted to AO3 and Livejournal. The artwork prompt used for the story is included at the end.

______________________________________

The last remnants of a hot and muggy summer were fading into fall, and Chris drove with the windows down. The cool evening air felt good as it passed through the car, and the dull white noise of the rushing wind helped calm his frayed nerves. He could still hear the engine making that faint rattling sound, but he wasn’t worried, not yet. The border was closer than ever.

Late notice, I know, but I've been trying like the devil to get concrete information on this whole thing before posting about it.

Tonight at 8:30 pm Central Time, the ATX Festival is hosting a virtual Oz reunion with Tom, Lee, Dean, Kirk, Terry, and Harold. It was originally supposed to take place last June in Austin, Texas but got cancelled because of the pandemic. Rather than cancelling the festival again this year, the organizers decided to take it all online. The Oz reunion is in a Zoom format and was actually recorded last week.

Tickets for the entire festival cost $150, but you can purchase a day pass for only $25 (plus about $5 in taxes/fees) HERE and watch the reunion that way. That's what I've done.

EVEN MORE EXCITING THOUGH ------>

As part of the festival's additional content, Tom Fontana wrote a 15-minute short film called "Zo" starring Lee and Dean where they reprise their roles as Beecher and Ryan O'Reily in an Oz "sequel." You can watch this short with the purchase of your day pass. (I think you can actually watch it by buying a day pass any day from now until the end of the festival on June 20.) I've just finished watching and *FLAILING*. It was OZSOME and leaves you wanting so much more! IT'S JUST SO EXCITING TO HAVE NEW OZ CONTENT.

Plot bunnies ------> hop, hop, HOP!

YES! It's time to sign up for Oz Magi!

I know, I know... 2020 has been a sucky year. But let's end it on a high note! And what better way to bring in the New Year than B/K kisses an Oz-style holiday celebration!

I wrote a story! A longer-ish story! It's been a while!

Happy Halloween, my fellow Oz peeps!

Title: Strangers in the Night
Main Characters/Pairings: Tobias Beecher/Chris Keller, Holly Beecher
Rating: PG-13 (some gruesome imagery)
Length: 9,400
Creature Prompt: Zombies
Summary: In the midst of a zombie apocalypse, Chris loses Toby in the woods.
Notes: Set in a post-series world where Chris didn't die and Toby doesn't hate him. Written for the 2020 Spook Me Mult-Fandom Halloween Ficathon. Cross-posted to AO3 and Livejournal. The artwork prompt used for the story (which is actually from the 2019 Spook Me collection) is included at the end.

______________________________________

Chris shivered uneasily as a strong breeze swept through the woods, rustling the withered leaves on the trees. He zipped up his jacket and contemplated the endless stretch of greens and browns that surrounded them. An ominous cold knot began to form in his stomach.

"I think we’re lost."

Less than thirty feet away, Toby stood motionless, his head down. He gave Chris no sign to indicate that he’d heard what he’d said. Instead, he continued to stare silently at something in his hand, transfixed by what he saw.

"I said," Chris called out, louder this time. "I think we're LOST."

Back in May 2010, there was an Oz reunion of sorts when several cast members assembled in NYC to do a charity stage reading of the play "The Godfather, Part IV." The play was written by Tom Fontana, with the proceeds benefiting the Writers Guild of America. "Godfather IV" was a comedy where the actors played fictionalized versions of themselves, often incorporating the personality traits of their Oz counterparts. Oz fans from all over (including many from Livejournal) attended "MobFest" and came back with rave reviews on how uproariously funny the play was, and how generous and gracious the actors and Tom Fontana were after each of the two performances (there was one in the afternoon and another the same evening).

Unfortunately, I did not discover Oz until 2012, and missed all the squee associated with this legendary event. As fate would have it, however, someone recorded the audio of the first performance and [personal profile] tobyfan recently sent me a copy (THANK YOU ANNE!). And, let me tell you, IT SURPASSED ALL MY EXPECTIONS. It was every bit as OZSOME as I'd always imagined.

And, yes, Lee Tergesen was totally the star of the show. :D

Being the devoted fan I am, I decided that more needed to be done to immortize this milestone event in Oz fandom. I therefore took it upon myself to transcribe the entire play from the audio recording so other fans could better understand what the play was like (or reminisce, as the case may be). The transcription is not 100% perfect (there was so much laughter at various points in time, it was sometimes difficult to hear exactly what was being said), but it is very, VERY close. There were several instances of onstage visual humor that aren't necessarily reflected in the transcript (for example, there was prolonged laughter at the point where Chris Meloni and Tom Fontana "snuggled" together onstage), but you'll be able to get a very accurate idea of what the play was like.

Please note, I am going to ask that no one re-post this anywhere else. I have a feeling the recording was not entirely legal, and I don't want to be responsible for raising Awkward Questions about its origin.

I hope you enjoy it!

I was in the process of writing my latest drabble for [livejournal.com profile] hardtime100 when I decided to watch the folllowing deleted scene from Cuts Like a Knife for inspiration:

I've always been disappointed with their decision to cut this scene, because it gives so much information with respect to the status of B/K's relationship at this point in time. (During my initial watch of the show, I found the jump from Toby informing Chris of Ronnie's betrayal to their heartfelt talk about Toby sacrificing himself to save Holly to be really jarring). Plus, that kiss on the back of Chris's neck! SWOON. How could they cut THAT? The editors must have been CRAZY, because surely there were other scenes that could've been removed if time was an issue.

But after watching the clip this time, what stands out more than anything to me is the GLARING grammatical error in the dialouge.

Beecher: Lot of questions about you and he.

You and he? *twitches* You and HE? WTF. I now think the reason they cut it was because they were too embarrassed to let such a mistake slip through to broadcast.

I refuse to believe that Lee read the line incorrectly, but I also can't believe that Tom Fontana, one of the greatest writers in TV history and the writer of this episode, made this grade-school level mistake in basic pronoun usage. Maybe he had some careless intern typing up the script from his hand-written legal notepad. One who was 12 years old.

SHEESH.

Earlier this month, Tom Fontana gave an absolutely fascinating interview with a podcast called The Crime Story where he talked about the making of "Homicide: Life on the Street" and "Oz." The interview is over an hour in length, but there is also a written transcript that you can read (if you're like me and don't have the patience to sit and listen to audio for that long). I highly recommend checking it out:

The Crime Story Podcast with Kary Antholis, Episode 33: Tom Fontana, Homicide, and Oz

In looking through the podcast's tags, I discovered that David Simon did a four-part interview with the show in September, totalling nearly three hours (!) in length. I haven't read/listened to those episodes yet, but I'm guessing they're insightful as well. Here is a link to part one of Simon's interview:

The Crime Story Podcast with Kary Antholis, Epiosde 24: David Simon, The Wire, The Corner, and Homicide

Which reminds me... I never did finish watching the end of Homicide. I still need to watch the last half of the last season (so, about 10 episodes) and the two-hour TV movie finale. I sort of lost some interest in the show in the last season after Andre Braugher and Reed Diamond left. But now I'm feeling somewhat motivated, and I think I'll move that back up to the top of my To Watch list.

And, in semi-related news... Lee appeared in the CBS show "Bull" on Monday night playing a prosecutor, and ohmygoodness he looked particularly scrumptious (WOOT he shaved!). Here are a few bonus screencaps for your viewing pleasure:

Oz prompts

Aug. 22nd, 2019 02:25 pm
vanillalime: (Default)
So many good ones, so little time to write for them...

I swear, I blinked and summer is nearly over. But this also means FOOTBALL. And pumpkin spice food products!

Anyway, I absolutely love the remix idea that [livejournal.com profile] cmk418 came up with for [livejournal.com profile] hardtime100, but I have a seed of an idea for July's "camping" prompt (a moody B/K AU!) so I'm inclined to start with that, I think. Hopefully I finish it before [livejournal.com profile] oz_magi rolls around. ;D

ALSO Someone on Dreamwidth ("wholeyolk" -- I don't believe I know her?) listed Oz as one of her requested fandoms in the annual Fandom Giftbox fest, but neither of her prompts sparked anything in me. Maybe someone else might be interested in taking them on? It's not an exchange, you just post fic (100 word minimum) to whoever's giftbox by September 22. I wrote a couple of things a few years ago for [livejournal.com profile] ozsaur and [livejournal.com profile] trillingstar when they posted giftboxes. Very low pressure. Anyway, here is wholeyolk's giftbox, and these were her requested Oz prompts:

  • Character/Pairing: Chris Keller/Vern Schillinger

Prompts: It’s not love, that’s for sure, but it’s definitely lust…plus a pinch of sadism, just for fun. I’d love some more of their history together, such as during the first time that Keller was put in prison as a teenager and Schillinger “protected” him. Missing scenes from their time in Oz would also be interesting—they certainly do a lot plotting together, so perhaps their liaisons continued in some form? If you wish to incorporate the characters’ canonical relationships/fucked up issues with Beecher into the story as well, that’s absolutely fine.

  • Character/Pairing: Miguel Alvarez/Alonzo Torquemada

Prompts: Alonzo’s late, last season seduction of poor, try-hard Miguel is fascinating, and I’d love to know more! Loss of virginity for Alonzo + first time with a guy for Miguel = yummy, smutty times. :D I’m also especially interested in Miguel’s point of view and the despair/hopelessness/oblivion of it: What is it like to go back on drugs and give up on machismo in one fell swoop? What happens to them after the end of the last episode? Or, Miguel has been told that he’s never getting out of Oz, but Alonzo’s not in for life, so maybe he has some string he could pull…

A couple of people posted giftboxes with Stranger Things prompts that I absolutely loved, so I'm going try to put something together for those. In June, I rewatched the show's first 2 seasons, then I watched Season 3 when it came out last month, and I fell in love with it all over again. It's basically become my new obsession. And I think I've found a sub-group of fans whose interests run parallel to mine, so the fandom isn't quite so intimidating anymore. Whereas with the Marvel fandom... it's so big and scary there, man. When I try to wade my way through their stuff, I still feel like somone from small-town Iowa who's been dropped into the middle of New York City. Without a map. LOL

OH, I nearly forgot! [livejournal.com profile] spook_me sign-ups will be here before you know it! I CAN'T WAIT. I wonder what new special creature prompt [livejournal.com profile] ozsaur has planned for this year.

ARGGGGHHHH

I am going to finish this Oz Groundhog Day fic if it kills me. IF IT KILLS ME

It is giving me fits, people. FITS

What in the world possesed me to write this in present tense? There had to be a good reason at one point.

Blurghhhh. I cannot even write a coherent sentence at this point. Or if I do, it has at least 18 adverbs in it. Which is probably a few too many.

Oh, but hey, the trailer for Stranger Things Season 3 came out yesterday, and IT IS AMAZING. And not just because they used an awesome remix of Baba O'Reily. Maybe I'll procrastineate by watching that a couple hundred more times instead.

Big Brother Steve + Little Brother Dustin =  ♥ ♥ ♥

A big thank you to [livejournal.com profile] cmk418 for hosting a special [livejournal.com profile] hardtime100 challenge for Friday's International Women's Day! It was a great idea and generated some amazing women-centric drabbles. If you haven't already, check them out HERE under the "ch 132 women of Oz" tag.

While trying to come up with ideas for my drabbles, I was reminded of a Claire/Gloria/Diane drabble I had written long ago. Initially, I was unable to locate it, but then I realized that I hadn't written it for [livejournal.com profile] hardtime100, but for a Drabble Tree instead. Specifically, the 2013 "Waiter, There's an Oz Drabble Tree in My Soup" challenge, an occasion that marks the very first time I wrote Oz fic.

(I've been writing Oz fic for six years now? Whaaat?)

Anyway, I tracked it down, and it still put a smile on my face, so I thought I'd re-post it here. :-)

******

Claire walked into the breakroom with a heavy sigh and poured herself a cup of coffee.

Gloria and Diane looked up from their conversation. “Rough shift?” Gloria asked.

“The usual shit,” Claire replied. “O’Reily was giving me a hard time.”

“I’ll bet,” Diane said under her breath.

Claire glared at her. “But I did have the pleasure of breaking up Keller and Beecher.”

“For fucking or fighting?”

With a roll of her eyes, Claire answered, “I can’t tell the difference anymore.”

“O’Reily, Keller, Beecher,” Gloria murmured, shaking her head.

Claire grinned. “Marry, fuck, kill.”

“Marry Beecher, fuck Keller, kill O’Reily,” said Diane quickly. “That was just too easy.”

“I disagree,” retorted Claire. “Kill Beecher, fuck O’Reily, marry Keller.”

“You would kill Beecher?”

“Yeah, a mercy-killing,” explained Claire. “What about you, Dr. Nathan? I bet you’d marry O’Reily, fuck Beecher, kill Keller.”

“Why do you say that?”

Claire raised an eyebrow and smirked. Quickly, a heated discussion followed, voices overlapping as rumors collided with secret desires. None of the women noticed the arrival of additional bodies into the room and were startled when someone yelled out, “Hey, why are you ladies so worked up?”

The three women turned and looked into the faces of McManus, Murphy, and Father Mukada. Then they looked at each other and burst into laughter.

The game was over, and they knew better than to have a second round.

So, Tom Fontana and I were chatting the other night...

LOL. Actually, we just exchanged comments on Instagram, but I am still tickled pink about the whole thing!

Tom had posted a stock photo of the infamous St. Elsewhere snow globe, and I left a comment asking him if it was true that he still had it (which I had read in a recent interview). And he replied, "There are actually three snow globes (you always need backup just in case...). I have one."

I thanked him for replying and said, "I'm afraid to think what you might've kept from the set of Oz!" :D

And he replied to that! He said, "Among other things, I have (in storage) the electric chair in which Cyril was executed..."

Which, interesting! And kind of funny, because the electric chair had been exactly what I had in mind when I wrote my comment. Heh.

(I'm glad that he specified that it was in storage. I'd be a little unnerved if it was something he had on display in his living room or whatever. O_O)

Anyway, in case you're interested, all episodes of St. Elsewhere are now available to watch on Hulu! Hulu has had Season 1 available for quite some time, but not the other seasons (for who knows what reason). Tom was posting some pics from the show on Instagram to help promote it. I haven't watched the show since it first went into syndication back in the mid-90s (and I never did see the first season), but I remember loving it. (Well, until the finale. Sound familiar?) I'm adding it to my lengthy list of "Shows I'm Going to (Re-)Watch. Really! One Of These Days."

Which reminds me that I need to get back to my Oz re-watch. Entertainment programming tends to fall off my radar when football season starts. (Michigan is currently 8-1, in case y'all are wondering... )
