The Oz/Hogwarts Sorting Ceremony, Part 1

What would happen if the worlds of Oz and Harry Potter collided?

Suppose Tim McManus's bright idea of dividing inmates into basic gangs (the Aryans, the Muslims, the Italians, etc.) turned out to be a big failure. (Surprise, surprise, I know!) So, maybe, Tim decides to group the inmates according to the houses of Hogwarts instead? Perhaps he knows Albus Dumbledore and asks to borrow the Hogwarts Sorting Hat, the magical object that is used to sort new students into one of four houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin.

Which Oz inmate would be sorted into which house? I think that people's thoughts on the subject and their answers could be very interesting!

So, I am asking any fans of both Oz and Harry Potter to fill out the following polls to indicate who they think belongs where. To start things off, I have chosen a diverse mix of 10 inmates, trying to include representatives from most of the original gangs, people who were on the show the longest, and/or the most popular characters within the Oz fandom. I'm planning on at least one more set of polls for additional prisoners, as well as another one just for staff, so if you don't see you're favorite guy on here, don't be upset! (After all, there were A LOT of characters on this show.)

Have fun with it! After completing the polls, please feel free to explain or discuss your decisions in the comments! Or, just jump into any discussions without taking the polls! Or, just take the polls! (Hey, who doesn't enjoy the thrill of clicking tiny little boxes?)

To help keep things organized, I'm going to create separate comment threads for discussing individual characters, keeping in mind that some overlap is bound to happen.

Please respect everyone's thoughts and ideas! Remember, there are no right or wrong answers here! If you simply think that everyone belongs in Slytherin, that's fine! If you think Vern belongs in Gryffindor, well.... that's okay! (But I would sure love to hear your rationale for that in the comments!)

Finally, when everything is said and done, feel free to use the results as a springboard to generate your own Oz/Harry Potter crossover fic or art! That would Ozsome!

So, let's get to it! As a reference guide, here is a brief list of the values held by the students in each house:

Gryffindor values courage, bravery, nerve, and chivalry.
Hufflepuff values hard work, patience, justice, and loyalty.
Ravenclaw values intelligence, creativity, learning, and wit.
Slytherin values ambition, cunning, leadership, and resourcefulness.

Yeah, that seemed pretty clear to me too. It'll be interesting to see if anyone puts him somewhere else.

Miguel was an another easy one for me. As despicable as it was when he gouged out the Rivera's eyes, it was done with the intention of proving his loyalty (rather than for revenge or to get ahead), and that immediately made me think of Hufflepuff.

(Actually, I surprised myself with how many I sorted into Hufflepuff.)

I voted Ravenclaw for Toby. He's interested in pursuing knowledge for its own sake, and that's that house all over.

I really struggled with Toby, probably because his character goes through so many transformations throughout the course of the show. I can totally see him *expecting* to be put in Ravenclaw. I actually considered putting him in Slytherin, but then I remembered the prag of Season 1. Nothing seemed a good fit for him (to me), but his last persona of social justice warrior from Season 6 finally convinced me to go with Hufflepuff.

Interesting..yeah he's all over the map.

His education would have made him the most obvious choice.

Awww... yeah, there's some slim pickings here as far as Gryffindor goes.

Yes. Wonder if any of the guards would be Gryffindor? Sean? Not Diane or Claire..Sister Pete? Nah, I'd go with Hufflepuff for her.

Keller's a tough one..but I went with Slytherin.. but he could be a total wild card and go with Huffelpuff to hide his true nature.

I have to agree. I went with Slytherin, but part of me was thinking he could have gone to Ravenclaw. Similar Vern, Keller have shown he can be very smart and sneaky. And the way he killed Beecher's past lovers was creative. So Keller could be Slytherin because it is there, but in a strange alternative universe, he could be a Ravenclaw.

And I think this poll is fun and very creative. It gets you thinking about the possible outcomes! I just love it! :D

My personal head canon is that Keller was very intelligent, but liked for people to think otherwise so that they would underestimate him. Like (if I remember correctly), he was actually a very good chess player, but he was able to fake being a novice in order to con Toby. Ravenclaw is actually a very distinct possibility.

I'm happy you thought the poll was fun! I'm a big fan of the books, and I thought I was pretty familiar with the houses. Then I was really surprised when sorting the Oz characters turned out to be more difficult and required more thought than I'd anticipated. (My initial temptation had been to throw 'em all in Slytherin!)

Any doubt he was going to end up in Slytherin? Dude's the poster child.

I kept thinking of all those elaborate schemes he came up with, and I couldn't resist the temptation to put him in Ravenclaw.

Total Ravenclaw, all about the pursuit of knowledge. No wonder he and Toby get along so well.

Oh, that's interesting, because I pretty quickly determined him to be Gryffindor. But I like your theory of Toby and him being sorted together.

Okay Gryffindor makes sense too.

From a season one perspective, I thought he could pretty easily be Slytherin. Without him, the riot doesn't happen. Even in season two, throwing the pardon back in the Governor's face could be seen as very cunning and a way to gain position in Oz.

I love that, out of the three replies, he's gotten three different votes, with all of us thinking the decision was an easy one.

Yes, I can't place him anywhere else.

I put him in Ravenclaw mostly because of his wit. I can see the case for Slytherin of course, but I think he's actually less Slytherin than Adebisi or Keller.

I could have put him in Hufflepuff too, just to mess with Toby.

(Side note- this is a pretty fun poll & I'm surprised no one else has thought of it)

I'm so glad you thought the poll was fun! The idea was born out of a discussion a few of us had in Trillingstar's recent post about renaming the URL for the Great Big Oz Resource List. I think I need to pimp it at a couple of Oz comms to try for more awareness.

That's one of the reasons I went with Ravenclaw. You have to admit this man is cunning, but also smart. This man still lived til season 6 when in reality, he would have been dead in season 2, 3 or 4.

In Oz, you have to be smart and know how to twist people around you. Vern does it a bit too well.

I wish there was a five house that was a combination of Slytherin and Ravenclaw. Like Slyclaw or Raventherin or something.

This is exactly why I put Ryan in Ravenclaw-- I thought Ryan's intelligence outweighed his terrible deeds, but Vern's didn't.
